Why Being Ordinary Isn't So Bad
It was by faith that the people of Israel went right through the Red Sea as though they were on dry ground. But when the Egyptians followed, they were all drowned. 30 It was by faith that the people of Israel marched around Jericho seven days, and the walls came crashing down. 31 It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute did not die with all the others in her city who refused to obey God. If you were to look up the word “ordinary” in the dictionary, you would find it to mean: of no special quality or interest; commonplace; unexceptional: plain or undistinguished; somewhat inferior or below average; mediocre.
Truth be told, most people consider themselves to be quite ordinary—no special qualities, no great skills, no advanced talents, no great intellect, etc. They consider themselves to be just plain Jane’s or Common Carl’s—certainly not hero material. Perhaps you feel likewise.
If so, learn a lesson from Rahab.
She was certainly nothing special to the people of her city. In fact, she was probably viewed as much less then special, and likely the last person anyone in Jericho thought would be known for doing anything great or noteworthy. Yet, she will go down in history as someone who protected the Israelite spies at the cost of her own life, saved her family (who she probably had been an embarrassment to), and, oh by the way, ended up becoming the great, great, great, etc. grandmother of Jesus!
So, if you're feeling like no one special today, rejoice! You are exactly the kind of person God delights in using!
